The Pharmacognosy Department is concerned with studying drugs derived from various natural sources, such as plants and other organisms, including microorganisms, marine organisms, as well as animals, and others. The department aims to provide students with the necessary skills, starting with the methods of collecting drugs, drying, and storing them, separating their components, studying their chemistry, identifying them, their biosynthesis, applications for their use in pharmaceutical preparations, quality control, studying their toxicity and potential interactions with other drugs. The courses also include the study of biologics, such as antibiotics, vaccines, serums, enzymes, and fermentation, in addition to hormones, vitamins, and minerals. The department is also interested in providing students with the necessary knowledge in the field of abused substances such as stimulants, depressants, hallucinogenic, anabolic steroids, and inhalants.
